NY Medical Cannabis Program

Some people use medical cannabis to help manage their health conditions with guidance from a healthcare provider. Learn how the program works, including access for young people with caregiver support.

How It Works

The New York State Medical Cannabis Program allows patients to use cannabis for any health condition with approval from a healthcare provider enrolled in the program. The provider must certify that the patient may benefit from using medical cannabis. Treatment is guided by the provider based on the patient’s needs. Medical cannabis is dispensed through licensed NYS medical dispensaries that follow strict safety rules.

Getting Certified for Medical Cannabis

Healthcare providers play a key role in the Medical Cannabis Program. They decide if medical cannabis is appropriate based on a patient’s condition and health history. Providers may guide product choice and use over time to support safer, personalized care.

Who’s Eligible for the Medical Cannabis Program?

Any patient may be eligible for medical cannabis with approval from a healthcare provider. If the patient is under 18, a parent or guardian must register as a caregiver to get products from a licensed medical dispensary, and may help determine how and when cannabis is used. This approach ensures that care remains guided by a trusted adult and the patient’s healthcare provider.
